Accused murderer ordered to stand trial in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — A B.C. Supreme Court jury trial will proceed for a man accused in a stunning central Nanaimo daytime murder.

Ronald Joseph Campbell was ordered to stand trial following a preliminary inquiry this past week in relation to the shooting death of Yasin Khan at Rock City Centre on May 20, 2021.

A first-degree murder charge against Campbell was applied last summer.

Khan was found dead after he was hit with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle parked outside the Wendy’s fast-food restaurant.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and a white SUV leaving the scene, while several 911 calls reported the shooting.

Several men were arrested following the shooting, including arrests made at a north Nanaimo hotel.

Nanaimo RCMP tied the shooting to Lower Mainland gang violence.

Campbell was denied bail this past April.

Evidence presented during Campbell’s bail hearing and preliminary inquiry are protected by court-ordered publication bans.

He remains in custody.

Crown counsel’s Nick Barber told NanaimoNewsNOW he expects the trial to last months, adding trial dates have not yet been set.

Campbell is represented by Victoria-based defence attorney Jordan Watt.

None of the allegations against Campbell have been tested in court.

If convicted, Campbell would face a mandatory life sentence, with no eligibility for parole for 25 years.
