40th Anniversary Toy Run a huge success

More than 750 motorcycles roared into Port Alberni on Saturday, delivering toys to a town suffering one of the highest levels of child poverty in the province.

Tens of thousands of dollars in cash and toys were dropped off at the Glenwood Centre with most of the toys given to the local Salvation Army who will make them part of Christmas hampers for Alberni Valley families.

Money will go towards a variety of children’s charities and family events in Port Alberni through the year.

Toy Run Chairman Dave Wiwchar was awarded the King Charles Coronation Medal for community service on Saturday.

“I’m honoured to wear this medal not for myself, but for the many Toy Run members, volunteers, and the thousands of riders who have come here over the years, supporting the children and families of the Alberni Valley,” he said.

Wiwchar, who is also the Operations Manager, Sales Manager and News Director at 93.3 The PEAK has been the chairman of the Toy Run for the past 14 years and is a lifetime member of the organization.
