Water, sewer, and garbage rates are going up, as part of a long-term funding plan.

Port Alberni Mayor Sharie Minions says the 5% annual increase is to keep up with costs.

“We are on a sustainable infrastructure plan with our water and sewer, so for several years we have been following a report talking about the useful life of our all of the water and sewer assets,” she said. “We are updating those assets as we go and the water and sewer rates reflect the work that needs to be done to keep all of those assets working.”

The city’s Director of Finance Andrew McGifford says the average increase for a single family household is an estimated $47 from $1,051 a year to $1,098 for this year.
