BC funds cleaner Alberni air
Catalyst Port Alberni greenhouse gas emissions could soon be reduced thanks to a provincial grant to fund new technologies for the paper mill boiler.
The BC Clean Energy Fund is providing $145,000 to Paper Excellence to enhance biofuel diversity and explore heat recovery systems to reduce natural gas consumption.
Keith Ellwood from Paper Excellence Port Alberni Catalyst says the improvements will be noticed, once implemented.
“The idea is, it will essentially recover heat and offset existing steam usage and reduce the consumption of both natural gas and biomass fuel,” he said. “We’re still in the early stages but the potential benefit of that project is reducing greenhouse gas emissions by about 17,000 tons of CO2 per year.”
