Barrier installed in Council Chambers

A large beam from the former Somass Mill is now a decorative barrier in council chambers.
The 24 x 24 beam was installed after a safety report recommended greater security for city council
Mayor Sharie Minions said while council doesn’t feel unsafe, there have been incidents in other cities.
“I think what we’re seeing around the country is there certainly has been several instances of violence in municipal council chambers – some pretty notable ones – so this is just a response more to that than anything specific,” she said. “I would say that members of our council feel safe and and we want members of the community of feel welcome in our council chambers so I think that really making it feel like a piece of art rather than a barrier was first and foremost in the design here.”
Sanding and installing the barrier cost $1800 with much of the work done by West Coast Home Hardware
