More than two dozen race fans filled the gallery for yesterday’s regional district board meeting, asking for the return of drag races to the Alberni Valley airport.
Alberni Valley Drag Racing Association president Roger Haggerty says the ACRD board decision to end racing at the airport 5 years ago, was based on incorrect information, specifically a letter said to be from the province prohibiting racing on the runway.
“I understand the letter that was sent around, and it’s not from the province like everybody said it was, it’s from employee of the Ministry of Lands and Forests and Regional Development so it’s not what it was said it was,” he said.
Haggerty said racers are still looking at a purpose-built facility, but are hoping for a return to racing at the airport in 2025.
