Tax increase down to 9%
PORT ALBERNI – City Council continues to carve down the 2024 tax increase.
Pulling funds from the Community Forest Reserve, Gas Tax and Growing Communities Grant, Mayor Sharie Minions says the increase is now around 9% and she’s pushing for more.
“9% is too high,” she said. “It’s higher than it should be and higher than is affordable to people, however, there are things that we could cut that would be pushing off problems into the future and that’s not a good approach either so council is very much trying to find the balance between keeping taxes as low as possible and getting done the work that needs to get done.”
Last month council began deliberations on a possible 16.83% residential tax increase this year.
