NANAIMO — An officer en route to assist another member in north Nanaimo suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries in a morning crash.

Emergency crews attended to the scene by Nanaimo North Town Centre, between Rutherford Rd. and Oliver Rd. on Hwy. 19A around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 15.

A single RCMP cruiser travelling northbound hit a patch of ice, left the road, rolled and come to rest approximately 10 metres from the edge of the northbound lane.

“When his vehicle came to a rest upside down, he managed to crawl out of the vehicle and request emergency assistance,” Cst. Gary O’Brien said in a release.

The vehicle was travelling with lights and sirens on en route to another scene in the city’s north end.

The highway between Rutherford Rd. and Oliver Rd. was closed to northbound traffic for a short time.

“A witness to the incident reported the officer appeared to be traveling at or slightly above the posted speed limit and in a reasonable manner just prior to his vehicle hitting the slush/ice,” O’Brien said.

Police are requesting any dash cam footage of the incident or for witnesses to come forward via the detachment by calling 250 754 2345.
