No alarm, video surveillance at mail warehouse hit by thieves

Security questions are being asked after a break-in and mail theft at the Canada Post warehouse in Nanaimo.

RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien says it happened about two weeks ago, when a back door of the East Wellington Road facility was pried open and an undisclosed amount of mail stolen.

He says police don’t have much to go on.

“That building was locked and apparently from our indications they made their way in undetected,” he said.

“Once they made their way in, they rummaged through various boxes and envelopes and took an undisclosed amount of mail.”

O’Brien says anybody could have accessed the warehouse between 11:30pm, June 10 and 6pm June 12, when a Canada Post employee reported the break-in.

“Oh absolutely, there was nothing saying anybody couldn’t have gone through. We’re hoping nobody did, but the fact is, if the door is unsecured, somebody could have gone in.”

We’ve since learned that the warehouse does not have a video surveillance or alarm system.

O’Brien says he can’t verify that.

A request for an interview with Canada Post has so far gone unanswered.
