Final bell sounds at Woodlands Secondary

Tuesday is the final day of classes ever at Nanaimo’s Woodlands Secondary School.

The 60-year-old school closes following provincial exams, but Tuesday is the last day of regular classes at the school which has served as a central Nanaimo landmark for six decades.

City Councillor and Woodlands alumni Jerry Hong say it’s sad to see the school close down.

“The teachers, the facilities, the faculty were amazing, so many memories from that school,” Hong said.

Hong says it was special going to a smaller school where you knew everybody.

“At a school with that kind of ratio of kids, it was amazing, we got to know everybody in the classes, we knew everybody’s names, you knew what they did and what their parents did,”

Notable Woodlands alumni include musicians Diana Krall and Allison Crowe.

Woodbank Primary School is also closing following a School District 68 board decision made in December pinned on declining enrolment and aging infrastructure.
