Island Health is under fire following what’s believed to be its largest ever privacy breach.

Two Victoria based employees no longer work for ‘Island Health’ after the organization announced health records of 198 people were improperly accessed.

Island Health’s Kathy MacNeil says people from all over Vancouver Island and beyond are impacted, and that most have been notified.

She says a broad range of people’s records were accessed.

“Mostly family, friends, co-workers and there were also some public celebrities that were accessed,” she said.

MacNeil ensures that privacy is a top priority for Island Health, noting education sessions for employees about privacy and security information are ongoing for staff.

“That we continue to re-educate and ensure that people know that our commitments to privacy and confidentiality and that their personal practices are in line with our code of conduct.

Privacy breaches are not new for Island Health; in fact, records of 349 ‘Island Health’ patients have been improperly accessed by five employees in three cases since late 2014.
