This week Terry teams up with Dr. Shaelyn Strachan, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management to discuss the advantages of ‘seeing’ ourselves as active people or ‘exercisers.’ With only 15% of Canadians meeting the physical activity guidelines, Dr. Strachaa shares a self-intervention technique you can do today to help create the mindset you need to increases your chances of staying on the exercise wagon! Simply, write a paragraph as you imagine yourself in a year or two or five living life as an active person. Describe what it would mean to you, how you would be feeling and what you would be doing, be detailed in your writing. Her studies have found even just doing this once increase people chances of staying with an exercise program. The next step she advises is to ‘formalize it’ – sign up for a 5 km walk, take the plunge to join an exercise class, etc.
