Nanaimo RCMP asking for tips after reported hit-and-run on elderly woman

Apr 23, 2018 | 3:48 PM

Nanaimo RCMP are turning to the public for help finding a truck and driver allegedly involved in a hit-and-run on an elderly woman.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said the 80-year-old woman reported being hit by a newer model white pickup truck while she was in a marked crosswalk on Fitzwilliam St. at Selby St. around 3 p.m. on April 17.

“She fell to the ground and when she got back on her feet she said the driver asked her if she was okay, to which she reportedly replied ‘No, I’m not okay.’ He then turned left and continued westbound on Fitzwilliam,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

O’Brien said thankfully the woman was only left with minor bumps and bruises.

“We need to know what happened, we’d love to talk to the driver. The woman said there were several people in the area but they didn’t come to her assistance. We’re hoping this will jog some memories and they’ll give us a call.”

When asked about the six-day delay in reporting the incident to the public, O’Brien said “Sometimes these investigations have to run their course. We were hoping given the location and follow up by investigators some information would come to light. Nothing did, so now we’re turning to the public for help.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
