Nanaimo RCMP hunting for suspect after attempted gas station robbery in Harewood

NANAIMO — Police are searching for a man who allegedly tried and failed to rob a Harewood gas station. 

RCMP were called to the Super Save Gas station on Wakesiah near Vancouver Island University on Saturday, March 17 around 4 p.m. for reports of a man being chased by someone with a bat. When they arrived, they found the bat-wielding man was the gas station owner who was chasing someone who’d allegedly tried to steal a display case of lighters. 

The owner told them the suspect ran out fo the store without the lighters once he saw the bat. 

In a release, RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said police don’t condone store owners taking action into their own hands since they could be seriously injured. 

This isn’t the first time staff at the Super Save Gas have fought back during a robbery. In September 2016, a clerk and his son were injured while trying to fight off a woman who pulled out a weapon and was wrestled to the floor.

Surveillance footage showed the suspect is roughly six foot with dark skin. His face was masked by a scarf during the attempted theft.
