Nanaimo man facing 14 charges after gun scare in Harewood

NANAIMO — A Nanaimo man is out on bail facing more than a dozen weapons charges after allegedly creating a scare in Harewood.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said they got a call around 5 p.m. on Friday, March 16 after someone spotted a man with a handgun and ammo in the 600 block of Seventh St.

“Given the fact the individual was known to us (and) he had a history of using firearms, we contacted our Emergency Response Team and several of their members along with our general duty members attended to the home,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Facebook groups lit up with comments from concerned residents describing armed officers and police dogs in the area telling people to be quiet and get inside immediately.

O’Brien said after trying to make contact with the man in the home for about 40 minutes, he came out and was arrested without incident. A search of the home later Friday night allegedly turned up an older but operational revolver, two boxes of ammo, gunpowder, a gun holster, ammo for shotguns and rifles and a set of brass knuckles.

Taylor Dylan Chesal, 23, was arrested in connection with the alleged incident and is facing 14 charges including careless use or storage of a firearm. Court records showed Chesal was given a two year firearms prohibition in December 2017 related to another charge.

Chesal was granted bail during a March 19 court appearance and will be back in court on April 10.
