COQUITLAM — The NDSS Islanders are provincial field lacrosse champions.

The senior team of Grade 11 and 12 students won the Tier 2 championship in Coquitlam last week.

They finished 2-0-1 in the round robin, and went on to beat Heritage Woods 8-3 in the quarter finals, Vancouver College 7-2 in the semis, and Royal Bay 9-7 to win the title.

NDSS was short manned for the tournament with only 13 players while many of their opponents had 25.

Nanaimo goaltender Isaac Prochnicki was named the MVP of the Tier 2 tournament.

Coach Joel Smith is in charge of both the junior and senior programs at NDSS.

The juniors are made of Grade 8-10 students and they played up in the Tier 1 category.

They lost in the quarter finals 6-5 to Terry Fox.

With a roster mostly made up of Grade 9 students, the junior squad should be even stronger next season.

Many of the NDSS players will be transitioning to box lacrosse in Nanaimo for the summer months.
