GRANDE PRAIRIE — Vancouver Island University’s women’s volleyball team are the class of Canada.

Saturday night in Alberta at the CCAA National Volleyball Championships, it was an all-B.C. match up for gold as the Mariner women took on the Douglas Royals.

The Mariners downed their rivals in four sets (25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16) to capture gold. VIU had lost three out of four matches to the Royals in the regular season and also fell to Douglas at the PacWest Provincial Championships last month.

It marks the second time in three seasons that the VIU women’s volleyball team has won a National Championship.
