‘She loves being in the ring:’ local dog earns high praise at Westminster Dog Show

NANAIMO — A local dog is a shining example of her breed after winning one of the top honours at the Westminster Dog Show in New York.

The Amazing Miss Andie, who’s already got 40 Best in Shows to her name, won Best in Breed on Tuesday at the Westminster show, held this year at Madison Square Garden.

Doug Savory, who owns the Amazing Miss Andie with his wife Cindy, told NanaimoNewsNOW he’s “usually not very emotional about these sorts of things, but I have to admit I was pretty emotional about this one. She’s a very special dog.”

Members of the Nanaimo Kennel Club, Savory said while they enjoy all the time spent with Andie, bringing home an award from the Westminster Dog Show was a long time goal.

“If you’re in the dog show world, it’s something you always dream of, making it to Westminster and actually making a footprint while you’re there. She definitely made a footprint.”

It’s an award the Savory’s, the breeders Joan and Sam Casler and handler Guillermo Fano had their eye on after the Amazing Miss Andie took home the Best Opposite Sex award last year, after a male Newfoundland won the Best of Breed award.

Once she’s back from the show, there will be very little down time for the Newfoundland dog. Always training, she’s also part of a dance group which travels to seniors homes and entertains the residents.

“She’s always doing something,” Savory said. “She loves being in the ring. She thinks it’s a game and she thinks she knows how to play the game.”

He said they’ve received several invitations to travel to European dog competitions and now it’s just a matter of making the plans fall into place to achieve another dream of theirs.
