Nanaimo RCMP put out call for footage from area of fatal shooting

Jan 17, 2018 | 3:46 PM

NANAIMO — Police in Nanaimo hope there may be some footage in the community which can help them solve a fatal shooting.

Nanaimo RCMP asked people to come forward if they have any audio or video footage taken in the area of Wakesiah Ave. and Jingle Pot Rd. between the evening of Jan. 12 and the afternoon of Jan. 13.

Troy Dax McKinnon, 34, was shot and killed in the Hawthorne Corner townhouse complex shortly before 11 a.m. on Jan. 13, police said.

Const. Gary O’Brien said the footage could come from a GoPro, cell phone or dash-cam.

“Anything could be useful…The investigation is very active, we have members assigned full time. But we’re hoping somebody can provide a little bit of evidence that might be useful to us.”

He said they don’t have a specific hunch there is footage out there, but are covering their bases.

“There’s a lot of cameras and with a dash-cam, if it’s fully charged, that can be taking video even though the car is parked. It may have picked up on something prior to the incident that may be useful to us.”

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

O’Brien said Mounties have spoken with “a number of witnesses” and denied the call for help from the public was a sign their investigation was leading to dead ends.

“It’s all part of our investigation, we’re just covering off our steps,” O’Brien said.

McKinnon was sentenced to seven years in jail for his role in a violent kidnapping in Vancouver in 2011. A Crown prosecutor described McKinnon as a “longtime gangster” with a criminal record which had been active for more than a decade.

O’Brien would not say if police believe the suspects are possibly from the Lower Mainland. “We have a lot of ideas but aren’t prepared to share at this point.”

He said a drive-by shooting in March 2016 outside the same complex is not believed to be connected.
