PORT McNEILL — One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a crash between a car and logging truck near Port McNeill.

The RCMP’s North Vancouver Island Traffic Services said it appeared the car drove into the back of the logging truck around 8 a.m. Thursday, about 12 kms south of Port McNeill.

An RCMP release said the driver of the logging truck had stopped on the highway and turned on the hazard lights while waiting to pass a police car which had pulled over a vehicle on the road ahead. The police cruiser had its lights on as well, the release said.

Mounties said a female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the car was taken to hospital in critical condition. Two other passengers in the car received minor injuries and the logging truck driver was not hurt.
