VIDEO: Nanaimo organization counting down days to civic election

NANAIMO — Civic elections across the province are still a year away but a group called Our Nanaimo vows to be vocal over the next 12 months.

Our Nanaimo, which describes itself as a non-partisan organization striving for better local government, staged a rally outside Nanaimo City Hall Friday morning.

Founding member and former two-term city councillor Fred Pattje told about 30 people who braved the rain the people of Nanaimo deserve a different type of governance.

“It’s long overdue that we get away from the negativity and dysfunction that has happened (for) way too long.”

Pattje said their group wants to be relied upon as a tool to help Nanaimo voters make an informed decision on Oct. 20, 2018.

“To nurture a new group of worthwhile women and men who have the wherewithal, the intelligence, the experience, the willingness and above all the civility to do things in a way that is so very different from what we’ve been given.”

Pattje said Our Nanaimo will not be endorsing any candidates.
