Fernie mayor says workers doing maintenance when killed at Fernie hockey rink
FERNIE, B.C. — Officials made plans Wednesday to safely regain access to an arena in Fernie, B.C., to contain an ammonia leak after three workers died a day earlier while emergency maintenance was being done on refrigeration equipment.
Mayor Mary Giuliano said the city was not identifying those who died in order to respect the wishes of their families, but described two of them as local residents and the third as an out-of-town contractor. The city said the two local residents were municipal employees.
The RCMP said late Wednesday that all three people killed were adult males.
A state of emergency remained in effect and fire Chief Ted Ruiter said plans were being made for people who would have to stay out of their homes for another night.
