RDN marks golden anniversary with opening of Rail Trail

NANAIMO — The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is marking a significant milestone.

The regional government representing rural communities stretching from Cedar to Deep Bay is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

RDN Board Chair Bill Veenhof told NanaimoNewsNOW they have a lot to be proud of.

“The construction of the pool and the skating rink in Qualicum and Parksville respectively,” Veenhof said of projects that stand out. “That goes back some time, but still they’re big amenities for the community.”

“The expansion of the pollution control plant in Nanaimo is a big deal,” Veenhof added.

Part of the celebration is the official opening of the 7 km Coombs to Parksville Rail Trail on Oct. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Springwood Park in Parksville.

There will be RDN staff and kiosks along the trail providing information on interesting sights.

The RDN will be running a shuttle from Coombs back to Parksville.
