Sistine Chapel Choir making rare appearance in Detroit

DETROIT — Heavenly voices will be heard in Detroit.

The Sistine Chapel Choir from Rome is performing Saturday at the Detroit Opera House. It’s the group’s first U.S. tour in more than 30 years, but there are only three stops.

Besides Detroit, the choir of 22 men and 29 boys appeared in New York and Washington. The group is commonly known as the “pope’s choir.” Choirs have been part of the pope’s entourage as far back as the fifth century.

Members of the choir got a taste of an American pastime Thursday: a Detroit Tigers game.
