Car sinks in Cameron Lake after sliding off slick road

Sep 8, 2017 | 12:33 PM

NANAIMO — RCMP say a frightening Hwy. 4 crash highlights the importance of driving with extra care this time of year.

Central Island Traffic Services RCMP Cpl. Mike Elston said a car with two Port Alberni women inside plunged into Cameron Lake Thursday night just after 8:30 p.m.

He told NanaimoNewsNOW the driver swerved on the slick road and over-corrected before ending up in the lake. Elston said thankfully neither women were injured.

“Until we get a good amount of rain and all of that residual stuff gets washed off the roads people really need to take care,” Elston said.

He said two witnesses helped get the women out of the Ford Focus, which sank and was eventually towed from the south-end of Cameron Lake near the beach.

Elston said crashes this time of year when oil build-up hasn’t had a chance to get washed away are common.

“We end up with people fish-tailing, off-road, hitting others. We need a little bit of time for the roads to wash this stuff away.”

He said losing control of your vehicle is a helpless feeling that can have disastrous consequences.

“Most of the time you would go off the road onto the shoulder, this time the car ended up fully submerged, but better that than hitting a semi-truck or RV.”
