Nanaimo man wins annual Port Alberni fishing derby

NANAIMO — It was an agonizing wait, but well worth it for a Nanaimo man who won the 46th Annual Port Alberni Salmon Derby.

Jeff Addison’s 34.5 lb. chinook salmon caught Saturday turned out to be the largest of the three-day derby.

“It’s been a long 48 hours since we caught it that’s probably the worst part of it. I would have much rather brought it in at 2:59 today (Monday) than at 12:00 on Saturday…it’s been a long couple of days.”

Addison said he plans to use the $15,000 prize money toward a new car for his wife.
