Local crews working to extinguish small, likely human-caused fire south of Nanaimo

NANAIMO — Since there was no lightning in Nanaimo Wednesday morning, the Coastal Fire Centre says it’s likely a small fire south of the city was human-caused.

Jessica Poustie with the centre told NanaimoNewsNOW they were first made aware of the fire off Nanaimo River Rd. just before 6:50 a.m. on Aug. 23. Six crews went out and Poustie said it was easy to contain.

As of this afternoon, it’s listed as being 0.2-hectares in size and is considered held.

Poustie said while thankfully the island hasn’t grappled with any major wildfires, the fire danger rating is still extreme and the potential is always there.
