TORONTO — Quentin Laulu-Togaga’e scored two tries in a five-minute span in the second half as the Toronto Wolfpack downed the Newcastle Thunder 50-0 on Saturday in the fourth round of Kingstone Press League 1’s Super 8s playoffs.

Liam Kay also had two tries, one in each half, for the Wolfpack (17-1-1) and captain Craig Hall had six conversions.

Greg Worthington, Fuifui Moimoi, Rhys Jacks and Blake Wallace had the other tries as Toronto beat the Thunder for the second time this season. They also won 40-22 when the two teams met in Round 7 of the regular season.

The Wolfpack, aiming for one of two promotion spots to the second-tier championship, led 22-0 at halftime in front of 8,522 at Toronto’s Lamport Stadium.

Toronto began the Super 8s with a loss at York — the Wolfpack’s first defeat all year — before bouncing back to beat Workington Town in the second round. They played to a draw at Keighley to cap their Super 8s road schedule. Their next three games are at home, including next week’s against Whitehaven.

Under Rugby Football League rules, the 16-team Kingstone Press League 1 is split into two after each team has played the other with the top eight taking part in the Super 8s.

The teams carry forward their regular-season points with the top team after the Super 8s winning automatic promotion. The other promotion spot will be decided via a four-team playoff: No. 2 versus No. 5 and No. 3 versus No. 4, with the winners playing off for the prize.
