Colliery Dam Spillway to be more colourful and creative

NANAIMO — The bare concrete walls of the Colliery Dam spillway will soon be covered in art.

The City of Nanaimo opened a public bid for art to cover all the exposed space on July 25.

Director of Parks, Recreation and Environment Richard Harding said they want to make the area more attractive for those visiting Colliery Dam and the City is open to all artistic and creative ideas.

“What you and I think would be normal, the artists might come back with who knows what. It could be a number of things, it could be paintings, it could be murals, maybe it’s something that’s attached to the walls.”

Indigenous art was chosen since Colliery Dams has cultural significance for First Nations around Nanaimo and was used for seasonal hunting and camping.

The bid for the $40,000 project closes at 3 p.m. on Sept. 15. There will be a question and answer session on Aug. 17 at the Nanaimo Ice Centre for anyone hoping to have their art adorn the spillway.
