Nanaimo run hopes to help starving children in South Sudan

Jul 28, 2017 | 2:41 PM

NANAIMO — If you’re out for a morning jog on Saturday, think of running through Bowen Park as a part of a relief run for those suffering in northeastern Africa.

The first even Bowen Relief Run is Saturday, July 29 at 11 a.m. The $25 entry fee goes to the charity War Child, for their efforts aiding starving families in South Sudan.

Co-organizer Steven Wood said even though he or his loved ones haven’t personally been affected by the crisis in northeastern Africa, it doesn’t mean they can’t help.

“While the situation will not be fixed easily or quickly, I think by coming together as a community we’re definitely helping to save lives and provide aid where it’s most needed,” he told NanaimoNewsNOW.

According to their website, War Child is working in South Sudan to boost food security, safety and health care for the millions affected.

Wood said his experience travelling the world also influenced why he wanted to help.

“Although cultures vary widely, we’re all very similar and we all have the same hopes and dreams. So I don’t see the run’s function as helping others, I see it as helping ourselves.”

Though this is the first time he and his friends have put on a run like this, Wood assured he’d done his homework when picking the charity and planning the event.

There’s a 5 kilometre run and also a 1.5 kilometre run/walk and it’s open for families and children.
