New lacrosse courts coming to Harewood neighbourhood

Jul 27, 2017 | 5:15 PM

NANAIMO — Kids living in Harewood will soon have more chances to get out and play.

The City of Nanaimo broke ground Thursday afternoon on both a new roofed multi-purpose space and a renovated open lacrosse box at Harewood Centennial Park.

Peggy Lake, with the Harewood Neighbourhood Association, said the new play space is sorely needed.

“The youth have nothing to do in Harewood. They’re in houses on their phones and games, they’re not getting out and doing sports or getting fresh air. This will get them out of the house.”

The renovation and construction were identified as priorities in the Harewood Centennial Park Improvement Plan from 2013.

Lake said it’s the most recent step in renovating the image of the neighbourhood.

“This place is no worse than any other neighbourhood in Nanaimo,” she said. “We’re jumping, we’re growing by leaps and bounds.”

A new skate park, directly beside where the lacrosse box will be, and a mountain bike trail are also in the works.

It’s expected the $2.5 million project will be completed by the end of October.
