Oceanside Mounties waving checkered flag on grad ‘death races’

May 25, 2017 | 5:29 PM

PARKSVILLE — While graduating secondary students in Oceanside appear to be enjoying an annual tradition, local Mounties say some grad games are no laughing matter.

Cpl. Jesse Foreman said local scavenger hunt challenges, coined death races, have become increasingly high risk and involve illegal activity.

Foreman said their detachment has obtained lists of challenges already done in Qualicum Beach and ones which could happen this weekend in Parksville.

“Things like steal from a business or drink as much as you can.”

Foreman said pictures of the challenges are taken to prove they were done.

He said Oceanside Mounties are investigating three separate files from a death race in Qualicum Beach involving Kwalikum Secondary Students, which likely happend in early April.

“Everyone should be well aware that we don’t have patience for this,” Foreman said. “When it goes over the line and a select few students decide to carry on with things like this, it’s going to have to be dealt with.”

It’s unclear how many students are involved in the so-called death races locally, according to Foreman.

He noted administrators and teachers at both local high schools are aware of the situation.
