NANAIMO —  Heavy police presence on a busy Nanaimo street was all for naught.

Nanaimo RCMP said they investigated calls about shots being fired in the 200 block of Nicol St. but found nothing when they arrived at approximately 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

"These calls are a complete waste of time," Cst. Gary O'Brien said. "The fact is when you have multiple frontline responders responding to something like this and it's a priority number one call, other calls are waiting. It could affect lives and jeopardize properties."

One woman was arrested for public mischief and is in police custody.

A hold and secure was put in place at Bayview Elementary School and lifted shortly after.
