No charges expected after Nanaimo teen hit by car

May 1, 2017 | 5:28 PM

NANAIMO — A Nanaimo teen has significant injuries after RCMP say he was hit by a car Monday morning.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the 15-year-old boy was hit on Norwell Dr., near Departure Bay Rd., around 8:30 a.m. on May 1. He said the boy was in a lot of pain but his injuries are not life-threatening.

“There was a number of witnesses to it. Apparently the young guy was jaywalking across Norwell trying to get to school and when he ran out in front of the car, there was not a lot the driver could do about it,” O’Brien said.

He said it’s not likely any charges will come from the accident, noting speed, alcohol and drugs are not factors.

O’Brien called the incident a learning moment.

“Jaywalking is prevalent in every community. We’ve seen it on the highway near Nanoose where tragically people have lost their lives,” he said. “We’ve had incidents in town where we’ve had other, sometimes fatal accidents…People don’t realize the cars can’t react in time. Even when you’re using a crosswalk we always tell people if you’re entering it you need to make eye contact with the drivers to make sure they stop.”

O’Brien said victim services have been offered to everyone involved, adding the woman driving the car and her daughter are “quite traumatized.”
