NANAIMO — A Victoria man has been charged in connection to Nanaimo's first homicide in nearly three years.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, Brandon Tyler Woody, 30, was charged with first degree murder and possessing a firearm while prohibited. He made his first court appearance in Nanaimo on April 20.

He's alleged to have shot and killed a 34-year-old man in the lobby of the Howard Johnson Hotel in the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 19.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O'Brien said Woody was arrested about an hour after the shooting by North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.

Woody will be held in custody until his next appearance in Provincial Court in Nanaimo on Tuesday, May 2.

Court records show Woody was convicted of a 2011 armed robbery in Kelowna.
