A provincial campaign designed to encourage the public to write their will

NANAIMO — Getting a will isn’t the most exciting task, but the Make a Will Week provincial campaign wants to remind people how critical it is.

Tiah Workman, a notary public in Nanaimo, said people never realize how important it is to have a will until they really need a will.

“Although you may not get up thinking about how important it is to do a will every day, honestly it’s well worth the time spent,” she said.

Without a will, Workman said handing down your assets and money to the rest of your family can become incredibly complicated when there’s children or various family members involved.

“Your estate may not be going where you want it to go,” she said.

Whether you want to set aside money to take care of your pet, or only want your money to go to very specific family members, Workman said drafting a will is a simple process of answering questions about what you want included.

“We have you come back in, review it with you, you sign it and you’re away,” she said.

Make a Will Week ran from April 9 to 15.
