Senior A Timbermen make two trades ahead of lacrosse season

Apr 13, 2017 | 11:07 AM

NANAIMO — The Senior A Timbermen have made a pair of trades in the lead up to the 2017 lacrosse season.

Nanaimo has brought in lefty Quinn Smith from the Langley Thunder for a third round draft pick in 2018, and they’ve also traded righty Randy Jones to Coquitlam for a third rounder in 2020.

Smith didn’t play in the 2015 season but has 20 points in 26 career WLA games between 2013 and 2015.

Coach Kaleb Toth says Smith is living in Nanaimo now but he’s not sure yet if he’ll be an everyday player for the Timbermen.

“He’s not going to score us 50 goals but he could probably bang out 15-20 and be a good hard nosed player,” Toth said.

The departure of Jones is due to his commitment as a full time student on the mainland.

Toth says the team wanted to accommodate Jones trade request after two years where he had to travel between Vancouver and Nanaimo.

Jones had 55 points in 33 games in 2015 and 2016.

The plan is for his offense to be replaced by the earlier addition of Dane Sorenson from New West.

Sorenson had 20 goals for the Salmonbellies last year compared to 18 for Jones.

Toth also hopes many of Nanaimo’s top end picks from the draft in February will be full time players this year.

“I’m hoping for at least five of them. We got some pretty good players that could make a difference in our lineup,” said Toth. “We started almost from scratch last year having 13 rookies and now it’s time for us to keep getting younger but also get more mature.”

The coach says the team will employ a similar style to what they ran last year with a focus on team speed, tough defense, and a good transition game.

In the next few weeks the Timbermen will start their onfloor training sessions.

Nanaimo’s first game this season is against the Bellies on May 25.

The home opener is May 28 at Frank Crane Arena versus Langley.
