Spring cleaning made easier with Nanaimo’s annual Reuse Rendezvous

Apr 8, 2017 | 5:23 AM

NANAIMO — One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.

That’s the idea behind Nanaimo’s Reuse Rendezvous. The annual city-wide swap meet happens today and tomorrow, April 8-9. People are encouraged to put unwanted household items at the curb for others to pick up, take home and reuse.

“These items have to be reusable, so we’re not asking for people to put out garbage,” the City’s sanitation and recycling manager Charlotte Davis said. “Maybe a piece of furniture or some sporting goods, old pots and pans you don’t have any use for. Something you would probably consider donating to a thrift store.”

Davis said the Rendezvous has been running in Nanaimo for more than 15 years, although participation seems to have slipped a bit recently because of things like swap and shop forums on social media.

“Still there’s a lot of people that are using this that are maybe still in the analog world…I do know it is quite popular, we receive quite a lot of calls about it.”

Any items left at the curb for pick-up should be labelled with a free sign and taken back inside if not claimed after Sunday, April 9.

“This is a lot fun, who knows what you’re going to find out there,” Davis said.

People are reminded to drive safely and watch for children in residential neighbourhoods while out bargain hunting.
