Nanaimo RCMP investigating indecent exposure at Colliery Dam Park

Apr 4, 2017 | 12:03 PM

NANAIMO — A woman and her daughter were given a fright on Monday when they saw a man expose himself.

According to Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien, a woman and her two-year-old child were approached at Colliery Dam Park near the Highway 19 bridge on Monday around 2:30 p.m.

“He exposed himself to them, made some threatening remarks and then ran off.” O’Brien said the threat was to throw the mother and daughter into the river.

The suspect is described as possibly Asian or First Nations, approximately 5’5”, very slim and between 35 and 45-years-old.

O’Brien said given how many trails cover Nanaimo and the area, indecent exposure reports aren’t rare.

“Understandably, we have thousands of people on a daily basis using the trails. They’re very safe, but we do have incidents from time to time that occur,” he said.

If ever approached by someone who exposes themselves, O’Brien said the best thing to do is quickly remove yourself from the situation.

“If you’re concerned for your safety, make as much noise as possible. These people don’t want attention attracted to themselves and in a majority of cases they’ll run away.”

O’Brien said the last thing RCMP want is someone getting into a confrontation.
