Local Habitat chapter searching for family for handicap accessible home

Apr 3, 2017 | 5:32 PM

NANAIMO — Habitat for Humanity mid-Vancouver Island is struggling to find a family to buy their first ever handicap accessible home.

The two-bedroom rancher will be the fifth home in their Extension Rd. Meadow Hill development.

“We’re very much wanting to find a family that could use that kind of layout to their advantage,” executive director Rob Hallam said.

Hallam said the deadline for applications has been extended to April 18. He said they are waiting for a building permit and will be breaking ground shortly.

“What’s really important to us is selecting the family in advance of getting too far down the road in the actual building of this property so we can accommodate whatever the specific needs might be for that particular family…rather than us trying to presume what the needs might be and having to adjust them at a later date.”

All other homes in the development are two storey and Hallam said traditionally the focus has been on building units for larger families, with three and four bedrooms.

To be eligible to apply families must have a steady income and be prepared to invest 500 hours of sweat equity volunteer work. The mortgages are zero down payment and interest free.
