Mariners Zaid, Rosenlund capture athlete of the year awards

NANAIMO — A clean sweep for the VIU Mariners as the PACWEST announced its major award winners Wednesday.

Mariners volleyball athlete Megan Rosenlund is the women’s athlete of the year across all sports, after leading the conference with more than three kills per set. It’s far from the only honour for Rosenlund, who was the CCAA women’s volleyball player of the year, a CCAA All-Canadian and a PACWEST First Team All-Star.

Rosenlund’s teammate Tylar Turnbull won the award last season.

Meanwhile, basketball star Usama Zaid has been chosen as the PACWEST male athlete of the year over all sports. During the regular season he finished second in CCAA scoring, averaging 28.4 points per game and led the Mariners with 9.1 rebounds each game.

Zaid also had an accolade-filled year, earning PACWEST men’s basketball player of the year, the PACWEST Championship tournament MVP, a CCAA first team All-Star, a CCAA All-Canadian and the CCAA player of the year.
