Nanaimo food bank boosted by sizable donation

NANAIMO – Clients of Loaves and Fishes Food Bank in Nanaimo will be better served after a significant donation.

The Walmart Foundation gave the food bank $41,000 to be used towards infrastructure, which frees up money that Loaves and Fishes can use to stock their shelves.

Peter Sinclair, executive director of the food bank, said the money will make a huge difference in how they provide food to their clients.

“We have a huge walk-in freezer that is going to be installed the first week of April,” he said. “That’s the major component of what we will use the funding for.” They’ll also be able to improve their loading bay and have more tables.

After applying for the money months ago, Sinclair said he was ecstatic to hear they got the money.

“It’s going to make a huge difference for the people of Nanaimo and the food that we’re able to provide for them.”

Earlier in the week, the province announced a multi-million dollar project to fund 100 BC food banks. Sinclair said the funding will help enhance their Food Recovery Program, which will benefit many other local groups.
