Lantzville’s mayor believes latest CAO hire will bring stability

NANAIMO —The District of Lantzville hopes the game of musical chairs with its chief administrative officer position has come to an end.

Ronald Campbell, a veteran CAO in several primarily small B.C. communities, has been hired by the District.

Campbell is the third permanent person to fill the roll since last September.

Mayor Colin Haime told NanaimoNewsNOW Campbell’s experience was a key factor in bringing him on board.

“(He can) evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the organization to a much larger depth than somebody who’s brand new in their career,” Haime said. “That was certainly an attraction to myself and other members of council.”

Campbell has served as a CAO for most of the past 30-years, according to Haime. He said Campbell has led the communities of Port Alice, Rossland, Cranbrook, Vernon, Port Moody and Cultus Lake.

Haime said Campbell’s history and references show an ability to work in smaller communities, which have different dynamics compared to larger organizations.

“It indicates the aspect of being able to come in (and) solve issues, solve problems, as well as move an organization forward in a more innovative way.”

Lantzville has had a difficult time retaining a top bureaucrat to run the community of nearly 4,000.

Darren Kiedyk was announced as the District’s CAO in early December, however, he bailed for a management gig in Langford before serving a day on the job in Lantzville. Prior to that, Brad McRae held the job for just 13 months before shifting to a management role with the City of Nanaimo.

Haime said all signs indicate Campbell will provide stability.

“There’s no guarantees in any way, shape or form, but his work history has shown consideration in most communities of five years or more.”

Haime would not reveal Campbell’s salary, but noted it’s within the range of the District’s budget. NanaimoNewsNOW is currently seeking Campbell’s remuneration details.

His first day on the job as Lantzville’s CAO is on April 10.
