Nanaimo prepares for marathon from brewery to brewery

NANAIMO — When it comes to exercise, hydration is key. On the Nanaimo Beer Run, it doesn’t matter if you’re drinking water or a beer.

Beer lovers will get to show off their athleticism and drinking skills on Sunday, April 23 by running over 9 km. to five different local breweries across the city in Nanaimo’s first beer run.

Event producer Guy Exley told NanaimoNewsNOW they have their priorities straight about the event.

“It’s not really about the running, it’s about the beer.”

He said anyone concerned about being left in the dust has nothing to worry about since the run isn’t intense and there’s numerous breaks.

“The event is just a wacky, fun way to sample some great beers and learn about some great breweries.”

Exley said many people at previous beer runs have even dressed up.

Nanaimo is one of seven communities hosting the beer run this year. As of now, more than 150 of the available 500 spots have been claimed for the run.

Exley said most beer runs come close to selling out in their first year, which he attributed to the rise of craft beer popularity over the last decade.

Anyone eager to both burn and consume calories in the run can sign up online.
