Bucs drop another game in overtime, trail Storm 2-0 in North Division final

NANAIMO — Two heartbreaking double-overtime losses has Nanaimo’s junior ‘B’ hockey team in a hole down 2-0 in the VIJHL North Division final versus the Campbell River Storm.

Campbell River’s Sheldon Brett scored at 4:16 of the second overtime period on Thursday night in Nanaimo to lift the Storm past the Bucs 3-2.

A critical game three happens Friday night in Campbell River, which is basically a must-win for the Bucs in order to have a realistic shot in the best-of-seven series.

“We’ve got to go to the Brindy (Rod Brind’Amour Arena) and we’ve got to get a job done tomorrow (Friday) and if we can get that job done momentum is going to swing our way and we’re going to be coming back to the Pirate Ship,” Lemmon said.

The Bucs trailed the game 2-0 on goals early in the first and second periods by Max Daerendinger and Kobe Oishi. Cole Broadhurst and Brady Chin responded with second period goals for the Bucs.

A big key in the game was three powerplay opportunities for Nanaimo in the last seven minutes of the third period. However, a lack of execution and strong goaltending from the Storm’s Chris Smith held Nanaimo at bay.

“Smith is one of the best goalies in the league for a reason, he’s making big saves at key moments and he certainly did that tonight,” Lemmon said.

Nanaimo went 1-for-4 on the powerplay, while Campbell River was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

Both teams had 35 shots on goal.

Following game four in Campbell River, game five will take place Monday night, March 13 at the Nanaimo Ice Centre at 7 p.m.
