Feb 27, 2017 | 7:32 PM

NANAIMO — UPDATE: Nanaimo RCMP have confirmed the body of the man who went overboard at Westwood Lake was recovered on Wednesday at approximately 12:30 p.m.

The B.C. Coroners Service is at the site and it will be at their discretion what new information about the victim and investigation is released.

RCMP confirmed the drowning death of a man on Westwood Lake the afternoon of Monday, Feb. 27.

Witnesses allegedly saw a man fall into the lake after his canoe tipped over. An off-duty Nanaimo RCMP officer who happened to be at the scene swam out to rescue the man but had to turn back due to the frigid temperature.

Crews were on the scene for several hours and boats were in the water, but no body was recovered by 5:30 p.m. A canoe had been brought to shore by emergency responders however.

Nanaimo RCMP said the dive team is taking over the search for the body and the cause of the drowning is still under investigation.

They couldn’t confirm anything about the man who passed away.
