Improved recreation amenities for Parksville-Qualicum region being probed

Feb 24, 2017 | 11:27 AM

PARKSVILLE — The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is taking a look at what the future could hold for recreation facilities and programs in the Oceanside region.

A survey has been launched by the RDN to see where the public stands on future infrastructure and programs, as the organization creates a Recreation Services Master Plan for District 69.

Manager of recreation services for the RDN, Dean Banman, said they want to narrow down a few concepts that have been discussed for a while now, including the possible expansion of Ravensong Aquatic Centre, among other ideas.

“Whether there’s a need for an outdoor multi-sport complex in Oceanside, which could be anything from an artificial field…to a rubberized track surface, to some stadium grandstand that would host some sport tourism events.”

He added that there have been discussions on possible future uses for the Parksville Curling Club facility.

Banman said the survey is available on the RDN website, at Oceanside Place and the Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach.

He noted that there will further consultations with the public, including open houses this spring, before recommendations go to the RDN board for approval likely next fall.

“As staff, we find it as a great opportunity to hear more of a wide base of what we can do better and more of for the community that we serve.”

The incoming Recreation Services Master Plan for District 69 replaces a document created in 2006.
