Clippers fall 5-1 to Kings but still clinch playoff spot

Feb 18, 2017 | 9:05 AM

POWELL RIVER – The Clippers four game winning streak came to end against the Kings on Friday.

But Nanaimo’s 5-1 loss was tempered somewhat by the news that the Alberni Valley Bulldogs lost 4-0 in Salmon Arm and the Clippers have clinched an Island Division playoff berth.

The night started off well for Nanaimo with a 1-0 lead after the first period on a power play goal by Ben Solin.

That would be the only goal Brian Wilson would give up though as he shut the door the rest of the night.

Back to back power play goals by Tristan Mullin and Cam Donaldson early in the second period gave the Kings the lead, and at the mid way mark of the period Jonny Evans beat Evan DeBrouwer just seconds after a face off to extend the lead to 3-1.

There was no more scoring until late in the third period when the Clippers went with an extra attacker and Josh Coblenz scored into an empty net, and then Tristan Mullin added a late goal in the final minute.

Both teams were good on power plays with Nanaimo going 1/3 and the Kings finishing at 2/4.

The shots were 33-33.

With the loss the Clippers are 2-5 in the season series with the final head to head game Saturday at the Hap Parker Arena.

The BCHL playoffs will start on Friday March 3rd and the Clippers now know they will open that night either in Victoria or Powell River.
