Jewel thieves make off with $1,800 bracelet from north end jewelry store

NANAIMO — A theft seemingly right out of a movie happened at a north end Nanaimo jewelry store.

It happened Wednesday afternoon when two men entered the store. They were the only ones there at the time.

According to RCMP, one of the two men pocketed an $1,800 bracelet while being shown various items by the lone clerk.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said it was a highly skilled theft. “Most likely they’ve been involved in other thefts, so we’re hoping we’ll get some information from the public. They may not even be from the Nanaimo area.”

The two men are described as of Eastern European descent with strong accents. They were both dressed in black and one wore a traditional Russian fur hat, the type with flaps that fold down.

During their time in the store, the suspects allegedly mentioned they were a father and son. One suspect is roughly 60 while the other is in his 30’s.

O’Brien said RCMP learned later the two men had visited several other stores throughout the day.

If anyone recognizes customers of that description, they’re urged to contact Nanaimo RCMP or Crimestoppers if they wish to remain anonymous.
