Public investigation begins into B.C. oysters making people sick

Feb 7, 2017 | 4:29 PM

NANAIMO — An investigation is now underway into why so many people are getting sick from B.C. oysters.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says 202 people have gotten sick across B.C., Alberta and Ontario, tied to raw or undercooked oysters which were possibly contaminated.

They say testing showed the very contagious norovirus infection was present in those who got sick.

To avoid the virus, making sure your oysters are cooked to an internal temperature of 90 degrees Celsius for a minimum of 90 seconds is critical, as well as diligent hand washing and hygiene.
